Voidtrain crossplay allows up to four players to explore the Void together across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox Series X|S (including PC Game Pass). The game relies on peer-to-peer networking powered by Epic Online Services (EOS), letting engineers team up regardless of which PC launcher or supported console ecosystem they use.

Local split-screen is not supported, meaning all multiplayer sessions run via direct online connections. While PC and Xbox versions share multiplayer compatibility, a PlayStation 5 edition remains planned for a later date and is not part of the active launch pool.

Supported Platforms and Cross-Play Overview

Voidtrain features online co-op for groups of two to four players. One person acts as the host from a new or existing save file, while other players connect to that active session.

Cross-platform matchmaking relies on build parity. When patches or hotfixes deploy, storefronts may update at slightly different intervals. If lobbies fail to appear across different platforms, players must ensure all participants are on the matching game version.

How to Set Up a Cross-Play Session

Connecting across storefronts requires linking accounts and adjusting session visibility in the game menus. Players on Steam do not need the Epic Games Launcher installed or a dedicated Epic Games account to use EOS, as the service communicates using your public Steam ID.

  1. Open the in-game Settings menu in Voidtrain and navigate to the account linking section.
  2. Link your platform accounts to allow cross-store matchmaking and lobby discovery.
  3. Have the host load or resume their save file.
  4. The host must open the Pause Menu, select the Session tab, and locate the option labeled "Is it an open server?".
  5. Set the visibility to "Yes" (public) or "Only for friends".
  6. Joining players can navigate to "Find Game" on the main menu to locate the lobby.

If friends playing across different storefronts (such as Steam and Epic) cannot locate a lobby set to "Only for friends," player testing suggests setting the session to "Yes" (public) until everyone joins. Once the full crew is aboard, the host can switch the session back to private or friends-only within the Pause Menu.

Managing Host Permissions and Team Controls

Because sessions rely on peer-to-peer hosting, the host's system controls train authority and world security. To prevent unwanted changes from unverified players, the game automatically restricts certain actions when random players join an open game.

  • Host Permissions: In the Pause Menu under Session, click the three-stripe icon next to a player's name under "Prohibitions and permits" to grant or revoke building rights, train handling, and item destruction.
  • Automatic Access: Players on the host's direct friends list are granted full operational permissions by default.
  • Gamepad Controls: Gamepads feature custom deadzone controls, and standard button layouts permit inventory and menu navigation for console and PC controller setups.

Troubleshooting Connection and Join Errors

Direct peer connections can sometimes run into networking conflicts. If you cannot join a friend's train or experience session disconnects, try the following solutions documented by the developer and technical patch notes:

  • Relink Store Accounts: If the session toggle refuses to move off "No" or lobbies do not appear, open Settings, unlink your Steam and Epic connection, re-link them, and restart the client.
  • Firewall and Port Forwarding: Add Voidtrain and your platform launcher to your firewall allow list. The developer recommends forwarding port 7777 UDP if strict network conditions block incoming peer connections.
  • Disable Conflicting Adapters: Close or uninstall third-party virtual network software, such as Hamachi-style adapters, VPNs, or virtualization network interfaces, which can misroute EOS traffic.
  • Check Epic Online Services Conflicts: If the game launches in the background without opening, open Windows Task Manager and end the "Epic Online Services Host" task. In persistent crash cases, players can rename EOSOverlayRenderer-Win32-Shipping.exe and EOSOverlayRenderer-Win64-Shipping.exe in the EOS installation directory.
  • Verify Game Files: Corrupted network libraries can block lobby handshakes. Run Steam's "Verify integrity of game files" or use your platform launcher's repair tool to confirm game files are intact.

Cross-Progression and Save Compatibility

Voidtrain does not support cross-progression between different platforms or competing storefronts. Save files remain tied to the specific platform and ecosystem where they were created.

Steam users have access to Steam Cloud synchronization within the Steam ecosystem, but progress will not transfer over to Xbox consoles or other storefronts. When coordinating co-op campaigns across platforms, designate a dedicated host whose system will store the world state, train modules, and research progress for the entire group.
