Witch Islands in Voidtrain present three distinct puzzle types: rotating symbol dials, sound-matching ghost sequences, and redirectable light beams. Successfully clearing any puzzle breaks open the protective central sphere and rewards you with a Strange Chest. These chests can be transported back to your train and opened at the next depot altar for crafting materials, seeds, and mushrooms.
Because the Void generates puzzle variations procedurally across runs, copying a static symbol sequence from another player will not work. You must follow the internal logic of each trial to crack the solution.
How to Reach Witch Islands
Witch Islands appear deep in the Void and are signaled by glowing swarms of fireflies drifting away from the train tracks toward the horizon. When you spot fireflies, engage your train's handbrake immediately to prevent overshooting the area.
Reaching the island requires equipment unlocked through story progression:
- Craft a stockpile of throwable rings (at least 10 to 15 is recommended).
- Equip your winch to tether onto floating terrain.
- Aim rings at floating rocks along the path. A green reticle indicates a valid anchor point, yellow indicates an unstable surface that quickly disappears, and red indicates an invalid target. Rings cannot attach to metal debris.
- Reel yourself forward across the rock chain until you reach the island core. Anchor points along the route provide stable footing for your return journey.
Symbol Combination Puzzle (Rotating Dials)
The combination puzzle features rotating stone dials positioned near a glowing sphere. Each dial displays four distinct nautical symbols: crab, fish, squid, and starfish.
To solve this puzzle, you must find the intended vantage point in the surrounding environment:
- Search the floating rocks and ruined structures around the puzzle site for a faint blinking glint in the air.
- Position your character directly on that glint.
- Look outward across the island fragments. When viewed from this precise perspective, four symbols painted on the landscape align horizontally in a single visual line.
- Read the aligned symbols from left to right.
- Interact with the stone dials by pressing the interact button to rotate each dial until your left-to-right code matches the sequence viewed from the glint.
Once the correct sequence is input, the stone dials drop, the barrier sphere dissipates, and the Strange Chest floats freely in the air.
Sleeping Ghost Puzzle (Rune Sound Matching)
The sound puzzle features a sleeping Rofleemo ghost hovering near four or five upright stone pillars. Paired picture buttons—depicting symbols such as ducks, witches, dragons, cards, castles, crying faces, or giggling happy faces—are scattered across nearby walls, trees, and ruins.
Follow these steps to solve the sequence:
- Shoot or interact with the sleeping ghost to wake it up.
- Listen to the sequence of distinct audio cues the ghost sings. The ghost begins with an introductory rhythm beat (such as bongo drums), which does not correspond to any tile and should be ignored.
- Identify the sound effects that follow. Obvious examples include a quacking duck, a cackling witch, a roar for a dragon, or a baby crying.
- Locate the picture buttons scattered throughout the immediate area and shoot the matching tiles in the exact order they were sung.
- Ensure every active stone pillar has a corresponding selected tile. An unlit or "off" state is invalid.
If you struggle to differentiate specific sound cues, you can brute-force the remaining tiles. Because each stand functions as a two-option toggle, a four-pillar puzzle contains 16 total permutations, while a five-pillar puzzle contains 32. Guessing the obvious audio cues first significantly reduces the remaining combinations.
Beam and Laser Totem Puzzle
The beam puzzle requires routing colored light rays across the island using a network of stone totems to illuminate all end receivers surrounding the central sphere.
Understanding totem functions is critical for routing power:
- Source Totems: Recognizable by a six-eyed head. These totems are active by default and continuously fire a beam of light. You can interact with them to adjust their aim in any direction.
- Redirector Totems: Inactive by default. They power up only when a beam strikes their lower receptor face, after which they emit a new beam from their top head. A symbol on the totem indicates the color output.
- Splitter Totems: Receive an incoming beam at their base and split the output into two beams simultaneously. They can be rotated 360 degrees horizontally, though they cannot tilt vertically.
- Reflector Totems: Fixed stone totems that cannot be rotated. They passively bounce any incoming beam toward a pre-set direction.
- End Totems: The final targets positioned directly in front of the central sphere. Each end totem features decorative head frills indicating the required beam color:
- Single fin: Requires a blue beam.
- Split fin: Requires a red beam.
- Multi-pointed fin: Requires a yellow beam.
Before aligning your beams, check the pathways for physical obstructions. Shoot any breakable wooden planks blocking the beam's line of sight, and bump into floating debris to push it out of the light channel. Once every end totem is simultaneously illuminated with its matching color, the large rear totem rises and slams down, opening the sphere.
Witch Island Puzzle Summary
| Puzzle Type | Core Mechanic | Environmental Clue | Solution Indicator |

| Sleeping Ghost | Shoot picture buttons in order | Ghost sings distinct audio cues after waking | Pillar runes illuminate; sphere dissolves |
| Beam Network | Aim source and redirector totems | Totem head fins match specific beam colors | Rear totem slams down; chest appears |
Transporting and Opening Strange Chests
Solving any Witch Island puzzle releases a Strange Chest marked with a rune. These chests cannot be opened on the island and cannot be stored inside player backpacks.
- Pick up the Strange Chest. You can still use your winch while carrying the chest in your hands.
- If you need to defend yourself or clear obstacles, drop the chest momentarily; it will remain floating safely in zero gravity.
- Return to your train and place the chest securely on the wagon floorboards. Do not throw the chest freely into the air when passing through void gates, or it may be permanently lost.
- Drive the train to the next depot.
- Carry the chest to the altar or anvil located past the depot outpost. Interacting with the altar breaks the chest open, dispensing raw materials (scrap, iron, seeds, chemicals) and mushrooms.
Mushrooms collected from Strange Chests can be fed directly to your crew Rofleemo on the train to unlock decorative crafting recipes, including furniture, lighting, and interior wall styles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you redo a Witch Island puzzle if you fail?
Yes. You can attempt the puzzles as many times as needed without failing permanently. If a combination dial or beam network becomes bugged or unresponsive, reloading your latest save resets the puzzle state.
Why did my Strange Chest disappear?
Chests left floating loose in the void near transition zones can despawn or get left behind when passing through the void gate barrier. Always carry the chest onto your train wagon and set it down flat on the deck before departing.
How do I know which beam goes to which end totem?
Examine the head of the end totem directly in front of the central sphere. A single fin indicates blue light, a split fin indicates red light, and a multi-pointed fin indicates yellow light.
Can throwable rings attach to everything?
No. Rings only attach to designated floating rock surfaces marked by a green aiming reticle. They will not anchor into metal scrap, man-made debris, or surfaces showing a red reticle.
